How we score festivals
Every wilted score is the sum of the criteria below. We cap the total at 100 so you get a clear, comparable number.
Longevity
up to 18 ptsYears the festival has been running. 50+ years = full points. Established fests get more.
Oscar qualifying
up to 20 ptsOfficial Academy qualifying status (shorts/docs). Yes = full; "in progress" = partial.
BAFTA qualifying
up to 12 ptsOfficial BAFTA qualifying status. Recognized industry validation.
Scale
up to 25 ptsCombination of categories, audience size, submissions, films selected, and awards. Bigger, serious fests score higher.
Engagement
up to 25 ptsSocial following, number of reviews, and review score. Reflects real attention and feedback.
Tier bonus
up to 15 ptsCurated tier: A-List (e.g. Cannes, Berlin, Venice), Major, Regional, or Niche. Only applied when we have tier data.
Success velocity
up to 4 ptsDistribution rate of selected films, world-premiere requirement, awards that lead to Oscar/BAFTA or Certified Fresh, and "Oscar booster" strength (how many Oscar-nominated features premiered there).
Industry density
up to 4 ptsFormal market (e.g. Marché du Film, EFM) and buyer count. Signals real industry presence.
Press
up to 5 ptsCoverage from trade press (Variety, Hollywood Reporter, IndieWire, etc.). More press hits = higher wilted score.
Filmmaker ROI
up to 4 ptsHospitality (travel, lodging, food), technical quality (DCP, sound), and free-to-submit when known.
Curation integrity
up to 4 ptsLow acceptance ratio (selective), alumni pedigree, and reviews per year as a proxy for "selects from submissions."
Discovery
up to 5 ptsHigh share of programming from open submissions plus high selectivity. Real opportunity for unknown filmmakers.
List recognition
up to 3 ptsAppearance on trusted industry lists: FIAPF, FIPRESCI, EFA, BIFA, FISA, CNC, Academy qualifying.
Wilted penalty
up to 10 ptsDeduction when "Wilted Ratio" is high: many categories divided by few years. Flags possible cash-cow or trophy-mill behavior.
Selectivity bonus
up to 8 ptsBonus when social following per selected film is high—selective and in-demand.
We add new data and refine weights as we get more signals. The goal is to help filmmakers choose festivals that actually advance careers—not just collect fees.
